This week's The Station of Love opens with the image of our protagonist diligently working at her sewing table. Despite having only one finger on each hand, Ms. Huong skillfully executes each sewing step according to a specific process. She happily shares the steps of making a women’s blouse, from taking measurements, to drawing the pattern , cutting the fabric, and more. Each step is meticulously and expertly performed by Ms. Huong, her hand disabilities seemingly presenting no obstacle.
From a young age, little Nguyen Thi Huong was aware of her differences. However, with an optimistic outlook, she viewed her disabilities merely as inconveniences in life. The greatest motivation that helped her overcome all difficulties was the love of her family, especially her father. When talking about her father, Ms. Huong’s eyes shine with pride. Her father was always by her side, supporting her through life's challenges and encouraging her to pursue her dreams.
Ms. Huong’s childhood dream was to become a teacher to help those in similar difficult situations. Recognizing his daughter’s dream, her father began collecting books and teaching her to write. Initially, writing practice was painful due to the stiffness in her joints, which often made her cry. Her small hands, with too few fingers to hold a pen properly, made the task even more challenging. Nevertheless, with her father’s constant encouragement, she gradually not only improved her writing but also managed to perform tasks like any other person.
Despite being an excellent student, due to financial difficulties, Ms. Huong was unable to attend high school and decided to learn a trade to support her family. She asked her father to buy sewing books and a sewing machine. Although learning to sew was tough, with relentless effort, she managed to sew clothes for her family and close neighbors. Everyone was amazed at her talent. As word spread, more and more people came to Ms. Huong for tailoring.
As her sewing business stabilized and built a regular clientele,, Ms. Huong thought, "Why should I stay at home and not step out into society to broaden my horizons?" This thought led her to the "For Tomorrow" center, where she met others in similar situations. She then became a vocational trainee, learning to make handicrafts at the center. Learning handicrafts, which is challenging for anyone, was even more so for Ms. Huong due to the skills and dexterity required. However, with encouragement from the director, staff, and friends at the center, Ms. Huong persevered.
Not only did she excel and progress quickly, but with her skills and meticulousness, Ms. Huong was also invited to stay and teach sewing skills to other disabled individuals at the center. With her experience and empathy, she not only taught sewing skills but also inspired her students with the courage to live and believe in themselves. Thanks to her dedication, many have found stable jobs and lives. Ms. Huong dreams of continuing to learn and contribute even more to the disabled community. The gift from "The Station of Love" will help her realize that dream.
