Tennis: French Open champ Swiatek rises to 17th; Djokovic, Nadal 1-2

VTV.vn - French Open champion Iga Swiatek joined the top 20 for the first time on Monday (Oct 12) by rising 37 spots to a career-best of world number 17 in the WTA rankings.

Rafael Nadal’s 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Novak Djokovic on Sunday for a 13th championship at Roland Garros and 20th Grand Slam trophy in all - tying Roger Federer’s record for men - did not change the top of the ATP rankings. Djokovic, who won the Australian Open in February for his 17th major title, is still world number one, with Nadal at number two, followed by US Open champion Dominic Thiem and Federer.

* Tokyo will host an international gymnastics tournament on Nov. 8, the Japan Gymnastics Association has said, an event which could serve as a trial run for next year's rearranged Olympic Games. The event is sanctioned by the International Gymnastics Federation and will feature 32 athletes from Japan, China, Russia and the United States.

* Germany striker Timo Werner is fully fit for their Nations League game against Switzerland on Tuesday but there are still doubts about Julian Draxler, Lukas Klostermann and Marcel Halstenberg, coach Joachim Loew said on Monday.

* The Premier League said on Monday that five people had returned positive results in its latest round of COVID-19 tests conducted on players and staff last week. The league said the individuals who had tested positive for the virus would now self-isolate for 10 days.

* Former world number one Andy Murray and three others have been elected to ATP's Player Council to replace the Novak Djokovic-led group who resigned from the body to form a breakaway union, the governing body of men's tennis announced on Monday. Briton Murray, Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime, Australian John Millman and Frenchman Jeremy Chardy will replace Djokovic, John Isner, Vasek Pospisil and Sam Querrey - who stepped down to form the Professional Tennis Players Association.

* Salford City co-owner Paul Scholes has been appointed caretaker manager following the sacking of Graham Alexander, the English League Two (fourth-tier) club said on Monday. Salford is co-owned by Scholes and his former Manchester United team mates David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville, along with businessman Peter Lim.

* Peru's Raul Ruidiaz and Alex Valera have tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Tuesday’s 2022 World Cup qualifier at home to Brazil, the Peruvian Football Federation said. The players did not take part in Monday’s final training session at Lima’s National stadium, where the game against the five-times world champions will be played.

* The Czech Republic will face Scotland in their UEFA Nations League match on Wednesday without head coach Jaroslav Silhavy in attendance after he and another player tested positive for COVID-19, the team said on Monday. Silhavy and the unnamed player tested positive after returning from the team's 2-1 win in Israel on Sunday. Both are in quarantine.

* West Ham United have signed Watford centre back Craig Dawson on a season-long loan, the Premier League club said on Monday. Dawson, who spent the majority of his career at West Bromwich Albion before moving to Watford in 2019, has made over 180 appearances in the top flight.

* K-League fans will again be allowed back into stadiums, which will have a reduced capacity of 25% from this week, the league said on Monday after the Republic of Korea's government eased its restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Fans will now again be allowed to attend games, starting with Gangwon's match against Incheon on Friday. Stadiums can be filled to a maximum of 30% of capacity to comply with the authorities' social distancing guidelines but the league opted to limit attendance to 25%.

* Dalian Pro have wrapped up the signing of Fenerbahce's Brazilian utility player Jailson, the Chinese Super League club coached by Rafa Benitez annnounced on social media on Monday. The 25-year-old, who can play in midfield or defence, has been in China since last month and, having completed his mandatory two-week quarantine, will be available when Dalian face Shijiazhuang Ever Bright in the relegation playoffs.
