After falling short in two previous seasons of Vietnam Project Runway – a reality television series for up-and-coming designers, the 23-year-old student won the show at the grand finale on Saturday night.
Truyen beat Giang Tu and Tran Hung with his collection Chau A Tuong Lai (Asia's Future), which was inspired by the crane – a bird, that in Asia culture, represents for longevity.
Using three basic colours – white, black, and red – and formed in unique shapes, judges said the collection showed Truyen's "extraordinary improvement in creativeness".
Judge Cong Tri said that Truyen's designs have brought the material [cloth] onto a new level.
"You are the one who proves that fashion is another form of fabric, but it is extraordinary and perfect," Tri, who is also a designer said.

The second prize was given to a collection of rich embroideries inspired by poetic natural landscape and peaceful rice terrace fields by designer Tran Hung.
Designer Giang Tu bagged the third prize with a collection inspired by the mysterious beauty of ancient Hoi An Town.
In the final round, the three finalists were asked to create 10 creations on the theme Prosperous Asia within two weeks.
