Severe drought causes increased damage in central provinces
VTV.vn - Severe drought has caused many difficulties for people in south central Vietnam. Although the drought is predicted to end in September, it is still a big challenge to production and livelihood of local people in the region.

The provincial authorities are working on ways to save the summer-autumn crop. However, prolonged drought has affected their best efforts.

Mỹ Tài Commune, Phú Mỹ District.

During the past month, the damage caused by drought has continued to worsen. There are many wells like this here.

"Farmers are facing great challenges. It is what’s happening now. Farmers won’t have a harvest due to severe droughts." - Nguyen Van Thong, My Tai Commune, Phu My District, Binh Dinh Province

In Mỹ Tài Commune, 60 hectares of rice and other plants died because of water shortages. Although people here have tried to dig more wells to find water, the wells have run empty.

Meanwhile the reservoir in Phu My district has dried up.

"Normally we use the water level in the local ponds and lakes to decide how much land should be reserved for rice cultivation. However, due to the prolonged droughts, we’ve miscalculated." - Ho Van Long, Chairman, People’s Committee, My Tai Commune, Phu My District, Binh Dinh Province.

71 of the province’s reservoirs have dried up. This also means that there are not enough water for rice and crops here. The provincial authorities are working on ways to irrigate more effectively, which focus on some crops instead of irrigating all the fields.
