The joint letter is signed by nearly 190 delegates and scientists that attended a workshop on preserving the Son Tra Peninsula's ecosystem recently held in Da Nang.
The letter of petition clearly states that Son Tra Peninsula is a unique ecological area. There are more than 1,000 species of plants, 21 species of large fungus, including 43 rare species recognised by Vietnamese and international laws.
However, the natural ecosystem in Son Tra is being severely affected by infrastructure development and coastal development, waste and pollution from urban areas, restaurants and tourist activities.
The letter suggested that the prime minister should call for the preservation of the peninsula's ecosystem and biodiversity as a key priority.
