Plant gene bank in Vietnam

However, due to climate change and the massive import of varieties, domestic varieties are gradually disappearing. The National Plant Gene Bank of the Plant Resources Centre maintains and conserves plant genetic sources across the country.

The Plant Resources Centre has so far preserved the numerous gene sources of a variety of plant species in the field and family gardens of farmers in Hanoi, Hung Yen, Hoa Binh, Ninh Binh and Nam Dinh. However, only 35 varieties have been applied, with the remainder still in the laboratory. In the coming time, the centre hopes to promote the genetic resources with the public. Therefore, it can gradually revive local varieties and reduce dependence on imported varieties.
