VTV.vn - The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on October 1 announced a programme to honour organisations and individuals who have made contributions to the conservation of wildlife in the 2010-2020 period.

According to Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Vo Tuan Nhan, 2020 is an important milestone for the implementation of the common goals of biodiversity under the strategic plan on biodiversity for the 2011-2020 period. So far, forest area in Vietnam reached over 13.8 million hectares with a coverage rate of 41.89%.

The country currently has 173 protected areas with a total area of more than 2,500 hectares, including 33 national parks, 66 nature reserves, 18 species and habitat conservation areas and 56 landscape protection areas. Many nature reserves and areas have been internationally recognised such as nine world biosphere reserves, three UNESCO world heritage sites, nine world Ramsar sites, and 10 ASEAN heritage gardens.

From 2014 to September 2018, 344 new species were documented and published in prestigious scientific journals around the world and in the Biology journal under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. Biodiversity investigation and monitoring, on-site rescue and conservation have made important contributions to biodiversity conservation in general, contributing to reducing the risk of extinction ofor many endangered species. This is the result of the efforts and dedication of many ordinary people, scientific researchers, individuals and organisations working in the conservation field in addition to the efforts of all relevant sectors.

In order to recognise and honour these meaningful contributions, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is organising a programme to honour organisations and individuals who have made contributions to the conservation of wildlife in the 2010-2020 period.

The programme is aimed at all individuals and organisations that are active in biodiversity conservation in Vietnam. Entries should be sent to the organising board no later than December 31, 2020.

As many as five individuals and ten organisations with the most outstanding achievements in wildlife conservation will be honoured. An awards presentation ceremony is scheduled to be held in the second quarter of 2021, in tandem with the International Day for Biological Diversity.
