VTV.vn - The Prime Minister has signed a decision approving the project on the production, issuance and management of citizen ID cards costing nearly VND2.7 trillion (US$116.4 million).

The project aims to build a unified citizen identity database across the country in order to automatically receive, manage, store, and search for citizen data quickly and conveniently.

The project is also expected to improve the efficiency of the State management of citizen's identity and create favourable conditions for citizens performing administrative procedures and civil transactions.

The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Public Security and police units in provinces, cities, and districts nationwide in the 2020-2022 period with investment sourced from the State budget.

Approximately 50 million chip-based ID cards are expected to be issued by July 2021.

Chip-based ID cards are hoped to contain information across 20 different areas such as insurance, driving license, tax, health insurance, and others which would store facial recognition features, fingerprints, and anthropometry.
