According to the US Education Department, in the third quarter alone, the count of such defaulted borrowers, those who haven't made a payment in at least a year, grew by nearly 274,000 USD.
Defaulted student loans represent 84 billion US dollars and the total student loan portfolio for the government totals 1.37 trillion USD by this quarter of the year.
