VTV.vn - Deputy Minister of Transport Le Dinh Tho urged the aviation industry and relevant state bodies to take steps to minimize flight delays and cancellations during the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday.

According to Bui Minh Dang, deputy head of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam’s transport division, the aviation industry saw a significant growth of around 19-20 percent in 2017. It served about 62 million passengers in 2017, an increase of 19 percent from 2016.

In 2017, the average On-time Performance (OTP) of airlines was estimated at 87.7 percent, higher than the global average of 75-79 percent, said Dang. Most of delays and cancellations have occurred due to severe weather like storms or mist or during public holidays.

Most of Jetstar Pacific’s delays were caused by technical problems, said the airline’s Deputy Director Nguyen Tuan Anh. “Once a technical issue is found, we cannot risk your safety to fly on time,” he explained.

Aviation safety and security must be given the highest priority, Deputy Minister Tho reiterated. The second is to improve service quality and the last is profit and business performance, he continued.

Service quality of the aviation industry has been significantly improved this year with the reduced number of flight delays and cancellations but there were a number of delays and cancellations caused by the airlines, he noted.

He urged for a joint effort of airlines and relevant state bodies, including Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation, Airports Corporation of Vietnam and Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, to solve the problems.-
