Manchester City stroll past Moenchengladbach into Champions League quarters

VTV.vn - Manchester City marched into the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the fourth straight season after a 2-0 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach on Tuesday (Mar 16) to complete a 4-0 aggregate victory.

+First-half goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan secured a comfortable victory in another impressive display from Pep Guardiola's side in the home leg, played in the Hungarian capital due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

* Real Madrid easily overcame Atalanta 3-1 at home in their Champions League last-16 second leg on Wednesday to stroll into the quarter-finals 4-1 on aggregate. Real, who were knocked out in the last 16 by Manchester City last term and Ajax Amsterdam the season before, reached the last eight for the first time since 2018.

* Watford boosted their hopes of automatic promotion to the Premier League with a 4-1 win at struggling Rotherham United in the English Championship (second-tier) on Tuesday while Swansea City suffered a setback in a 3-0 defeat at Bournemouth. Watford stayed second on 72 points from 37 games, seven behind leaders Norwich City who have a game in hand, while third-placed Swansea have 69 from 36 matches.

* Manchester United Women will play at Old Trafford for the first time when they host West Ham United in the Women's Super League next week, the club said on Tuesday. Casey Stoney's side, who usually play their home games at Leigh Sports Village, are due to host West Ham on Mar 27.

* Tiger Woods said on Tuesday he is back home and continuing his recovery following his accident last month, according to a statement posted on his Twitter account.

* England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford will play no part in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers this month after injuring an abdominal muscle, his club Everton said on Tuesday. Pickford was substituted late in the first half of Saturday's 2-1 home loss to Burnley after he appeared to injure himself while attempting to make a save and the 27-year-old underwent a scan on Monday.

* Rafa Nadal will skip the Miami Open that begins later this month in a bid to recover from a back injury in time for the clay court swing, the Spaniard said on Tuesday. Nadal had not played since his quarter-final exit at the Australian Open last month and also skipped the ATP 500 event in Dubai.

* Africa Cup of Nations will continue to be played every two years, the new Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe said on Tuesday despite a call from FIFA for it to be held only every four years.

* Southampton's English-born striker Che Adams on Tuesday named in Scotland's squad for the first time ahead of this month's World Cup qualifiers. The 24-year-old has played for England's under-20 team but qualifies for Scotland through the grandparent rule.

* Paris St Germain will once again be without Neymar when they face Lille in the French Cup last 16 on Wednesday as the Brazil forward has not yet fully recovered from an adductor muscle injury, the club said on Tuesday. Neymar picked up the injury in the previous round against Caen on Feb. 10 and the French champions initially said he would be out for action for "up to four weeks".

* Sweden's record goalscorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been named in coach Janne Andersson's squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Kosovo, five years after the striker retired from the national team.

* Chelsea's Kai Havertz said he is now free of injury and illness and there can be no excuses if he fails to deliver at Stamford Bridge. The German midfielder managed just one goal and four assists in 21 league appearances since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen for 71 million pounds (US$98.20 million).

* Midfielder Matteo Guendouzi said he will try to fight his way back into Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta's plans once his loan spell at Hertha Berlin comes to an end. The 21-year-old was a regular under former Arsenal manager Unai Emery but was loaned out to the Bundesliga club in October by Arteta.
