Nguyen Thanh Phong was re-elected as chairman of the People’s Committee of Vietnam’s southern economic hub with nearly 90% of the votes.
According to Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council Nguyen Thi Le, over the next five years the council will have to deal with major issues of strategic importance to the city’s development.
Speaking at the meeting, municipal Party Secretary Nguyen Van Nen urged the People’s Council to step up measures to improve the business environment such that the city will become more attractive to both domestic and foreign investors.
He stressed that the organisation and functioning of the city’s People’s Council should be reformed to serve the people better.
The municipal Party chief asked the People’s Council to enhance its supervisory role, especially in overseeing the fulfilment of public services by public offices and their employees.
He also suggested frequently holding dialogues with voters so that they can take a greater role in discussing the city’s development.
The first meeting of the Ho Chi Minh City’s People Council will last for two days.
