VTV.vn - Hanoi is now eligible to announce the end of the COVID-19 epidemic in the capital city, according to a senior Hanoi leader.

On May 15, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Ngo Van Quy said that in the past 29 days, the city has not recorded any new COVID-19 infection case in the community, while the medical blockade on Dong Cuu Village (Dung Tien Commune, Thuong Tin District) – the last outbreak in the city – was lifted on May 14. Of the 112 confirmed cases in Hanoi, 101 have been announced as recovered.

Under the set regulations, Hanoi is now eligible to announce the end of the epidemic, affirmed Quy.

However, in the future there will be more people coming back from abroad and there may be new cases among this group, the Hanoi leader warned, adding that the city has actively devised plans to strictly control entry from abroad right at the airport, as well as prepared two isolation zones and implementing measures to prevent transmission to the community.

Hanoi authorities have announced that the capital city has disbursed 99.9% of social security support packages to people with meritorious services, social beneficiaries, and poor and near-poor households facing difficulties due to COVID-19.

On the same day, the 15th Hanoi People’s Council convened for its 14th session, in which the council adopted a resolution stipulating certain regulations and expenditures for COVID-19 prevention and control.

Accordingly, the city spent more than VND406 billion on specific groups in prevention and control of the epidemic, including people who are in local isolation camps, people in duty at such isolation areas, and forces participating in monitoring of social isolation at the gateway to the capital city.

The city also covers 50% of housing rental fees for students, workers, families and individuals renting State-owned houses, as well as providing budget support for teachers participating in online teaching on TV during the previous social distancing period.

* On the same day, the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control issued a written request to the relevant local Steering Committees and the concerned ministries and agencies to carry out safe medical examinations and treatment amidst the enhanced prevention and control of COVID-19 in the new situation. Accordingly, measures to control infection in medical examination and treatment facilities should be maintained, along with intensifying the use of IT solutions to improve the medical examination process and reduce the number of people gathering at hospitals.

* The People's Committee of Thai Binh Province has issued Official Dispatch No. 2181 asking localities, departments and branches in the province to continue strengthening measures to prevent and combat COVID-19, especially in the context that the locality received 169 Vietnamese citizens (including 15 Thai Binh natives) who returned home from Russia and have been placed in medical isolation in a military-run facility in Dong Hung District. Among them, 23 have been confirmed to be positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus and they are now receiving isolated treatment at the Thai Binh Provincial General Hospital.

* On May 15, the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee received VND1.8 billion donated by Gamuda Land Joint Stock Company to support for the COVID-19 fight in Vietnam. On the same day, the Vietnam Development Bank Trade Union also donated VND600 million to the fight via the VFF.

* On May 15, a delegation from the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs headed by Deputy Minister Le Quan, held a meeting with the People's Committee of Lang Son Province on the implementation of support policies to local people who are in trouble due to COVID-19.

As of May 12, the whole province has disbursed more than VND161 billion between 193,587 people, reaching more than 98% of those in the four groups of people with meritorious services, social beneficiaries, the poor, and near-poor households. For the business group, Lang Son Provincial People's Committee has directed the local Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs to coordinate with the relevant units to quickly carry out the disbursement within May.

* On the same day, the Quang Ngai People's Committee issued a decision to allocate more than VND54.4 billion to support people struggling with COVID-19 (phase 1) in the province.

* On the morning of May 16, one new case of COVID-19 was detected among Vietnamese returning from Russia on flight VN0062, which landed on May 13.

According to the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, the new imported case brought the total number of COVID-19 cases to 314.

The patient, a 62-year-old woman from Thanh Hoa Province, along with all passengers on the flight, was immediately quarantined after landing, posing no risk of spreading the virus among the community.

Since April 16, the country has gone 30 days without any infection in community.

So far, 260 COVID-19 patients in Vietnam have been given the all-clear. Among the 54 patients still receiving treatment, three have tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 once, and 10 have tested negative at least twice.

Regarding the only critical ill COVID-19 patient in Vietnam, the National Steering Committee announced that the British pilot, known as Patient 91, is suffering 90% damage to his lungs and has been completely dependent on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) for almost 40 days.

On May 12, the Ministry of Health hosted a consultation with health experts from the country’s top hospitals on the case, concluding that a lung transplant is the only solution to save the patient.

However, it requires the 43-year-old man to be given the all-clear and receive intensive antibiotic stewardship before being transferred to Cho Ray Hospital for the transplant.

By the morning of May 15, 40 people have called the Vietnam National Coordinating Centre for Human Organ Transplantation to voluntarily donate a part of their lungs to save Patient 91. They are all Vietnamese and do not know the British national.

Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long said that there have been three cases of successful COVID-19 treated patients thanks to lung transplants worldwide. Vietnam has successfully carried out lung transplants before. Therefore, the country has the capacity and qualifications to perform lung transplants for the British patient, but doctors still prioritise the search for donated organs from brain-dead donors, Long said, adding that the Ministry of Health acknowledges the hearts of individuals who have applied for lung donation to support Patient 91.
