During 2020, the forestry industry faced several difficulties due to climate change, natural disasters, and the COVID-19 pandemic. In a number of localities, forest quality and area shrunk due to deforestation and forest fires.
Nearly 9,000 cases of illegal forest exploitation and violations of wildlife protection were recorded. Meanwhile, the country's forest coverage remains at 42%.
Export turnover of forestry products accounted for 5% of the country's total. Vietnam is committed to reducing CO2 emissions by 10.3 million tonnes. During the 2021-2025 period, the forestry industry will focus on reviewing its planning and boost the development of forest environment services.
