Floods claim five lives, cause damage in northern province

VTV.vn - Torrential rain during the past few days have triggered flash floods and landslides in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang, killing at least five local people, according to provincial authorities.

Three people were killed by landslides in Hoang Su Phi district and Ha Giang city. A two-year-old boy drowned in floodwaters in Bac Quang district and a 27-year-old man was washed away by violent floodwaters in Bac Me district.

Torrential rain and rising floodwaters also damaged 57 houses and submerged more than 500 houses in Ha Giang city, and districts of Vi Xuyen and Hoang Su Phi.

Traffic on National Highway No2 linking Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang provinces was paralyzed by landslides. Clean-up efforts have been intensified and traffic is expected to return to normal at midnight if no landslides are reported.

The Ha Giang provincial administration has mobilized hundreds of police officers, soldiers and young volunteers to fan out to affected areas to assist local people.

Torrential rain is forecast to last for several days, according to the hydro-meteorologists.
