Federer overcomes Verdasco in Dubai, Nishikori falls to qualifier

VTV.vn - Roger Federer was made to work hard by Fernando Verdasco before beating the Spanish veteran 6-3 3-6 6-3 on Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

 

The 20-times Grand Slam champion next faces Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics who beat Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4 6-2. Earlier, Polish qualifier Hubert Hurkacz upset top seed Kei Nishikori 7-5 5-7 6-2 for his first win over a top 10 player.

* FIFA are investigating Emiliano Sala's transfer from Nantes to Cardiff City following a claim from the French club, the global soccer body said on Wednesday. The Argentine died when the plane carrying him from Nantes to Cardiff crashed in the English Channel, shortly after signing for the English Premier League side.

* The Flamengo training centre where 10 teenage players died in a blaze earlier this month was shut down by the Rio de Janeiro government on Wednesday because it does not have the proper fire and safety permits. A fire that began in an air conditioning unit and spread through a dormitory used by players in the Flamengo youth squad killed 10 boys, all aged between 14 and 16 on the morning of Feb. 8.

* Fans in India will be able to watch Sunday's El Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona live and free on Facebook Watch, the social media giant's streaming platform, La Liga has said.

* Sebastian Vettel crashed his Ferrari on the second day of Formula One's final pre-season test in Spain on Wednesday while Carlos Sainz went fastest for McLaren. Vettel's crash in the morning at the Circuit de Catalunya was the team's first pre-season setback after looking quick and reliable so far. The season starts in Australia on March 17.

* FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Wednesday that football’s governing body will consider changing the rules over the transfer of minors after Premier League Chelsea were hit with a transfer ban. Chelsea were banned last week from signing anyone in the next two transfer windows after being found guilty of breaching FIFA’s rules relating to signing overseas players under the age of 18.

* Federico Chiesa celebrated his 100th appearance for Fiorentina by inspiring them to another rousing fightback as they came from two goals down to draw 3-3 at home to Atalanta in their dramatic Coppa Italia semi-final first leg clash on Wednesday. Chiesa scored a stunning solo goal and set up the late equaliser for Luis Muriel after the visitors had led 2-0 and 3-2. Fiorentina levelled 3-3 in the 79th minute, as Muriel turning in Chiesa's cross for his sixth goal in all competitions since joining Fiorentina on loan from Sevilla in January.

* Marin Cilic will return to defend his Queen's Club title this year while Australian Open semi-finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas will play in the tournament for the first time, the organisers said on Wednesday.

* Renault appointed former Williams driver Sergey Sirotkin as their Formula One reserve on Wednesday, with the Russian also scheduled to compete in the World Endurance Championship with SMP Racing.

* The 2019 Algarve Cup women's soccer invitational tournament curtained up on Wednesday, 100 days ahead of the FIFA Women's World Cup in France. The 26th edition of Algarve Cup features 12 teams slotted in four groups. The two best group winners will contend for the title, while the other two group winners participate in the third-place playoff.
