CPV General Secretary visits Lao PDR
VTV.vn - The General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong led a high-ranking CPV’s delegation to make an official visit to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, arrived in Vientiane, Laos on Thursday morning to the welcoming reception of around a 1,000 people, including residents, representatives of overseas Vietnamese in Laos, and Vietnamese students currently studying here. This visit is of great significance as it takes place after the two parties successfully organized their national congresses earlier in the year and began a new tenure. It  is also intended to help deepen the friendship with the Lao PDR.

During his first working day, the party chief held talks with Lao party General Secretary and President Bunnhang Volachit. The two leaders discussed co-operation in defense, security, economics, infrastructure, human resources, and tourism. CPV General Secretary Trong and his counterpart also underscored the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security and safety in the East Sea.

After their talks, CPV General Secretary Trong and the Laos president witnessed the signing of seven co-operation documents in Vientiane. They are memoranda of understanding on several aspects, including the establishment of a high school in Lao Borikhamxai Province, the construction of the Hanoi - Vientiane Highway, a joint website related to economic and trade co-operation, and adjustments of the Vietnam - Laos cooperation strategy in 2016 - 2020.

On the same day, CPV General Secretary Trong also met Laos Prime Minister Thongloun  Sisoulith and exchanged views on ties between the two countries, including  ways to favor businesses operation in both countries, and measures to effectively implementing already agreed co-operation deals on trade, education, culture, science and technology, and especially defense.

At the meeting with Lao Chairman of National Assembly Pany Yathotu on the same day, General Secretary Trong suggested an increase of exchanges of information and experiences between the two countries in relation to legislation, supervision of government and reactions to major developments in their respective countries. The two leaders also expressed deep gratitude for the help and support that the two countries have provided for each other.
