Community disaster risk management

VTV.vn - Providing up-to-date information for the public to help them better cope with natural disasters and minimise damage is part of Binh Dinh Province's community plans to mitigate the risks posed by natural disasters.

The plan has assisted people in Binh Dinh, which is one of the provinces hit hardest by natural disasters.

Nhon Loc Commune's public speakers are broadcasting information about preventative measures to minimise the damage posed by an approaching storm. This is part of the province's new plan to prepare the public for natural disasters. The model is being implemented in 9 other communes in the province.

Binh Dinh is one of 10 central provinces chosen to implement the community-based model. The gist of the plan is to start managing disaster risks from the bottom up, with the people directly affected by them. Each ward will have its own technical advisors to best assist the residents.

The historic flood in 2013 in Binh Dinh cut off many communities in Phuoc Loc Commune. Back then, the area was short of shelter. The current plan has helped many people choose appropriate construction models to best cope with natural disasters.

This community-based model will be rolled out to other central provinces in the coming period. 65% of storms and typhoons in Vietnam affect the central region, while the area is already one of the country's poorest areas. New disaster management models like this will greatly help lessen the damage.
