Coffee industry to boost value

VTV.vn - The local coffee industry is feeling pressure to reform the production and processing of coffee products to gain added value.

Vietnam produces 1.4 million tonnes of coffee every year, 95 to 97 percent of which is exported. However, the export value of raw beans is low. Vietnam processes 10 percent of its total coffee output for export, including both instant coffee products and roasted and ground coffee beans.

These processed coffee products have not achieved a high volume due to lack of quality as well as lack of brand recognition, so they are unable to compete with popular brands around the world. By the end of this year, the Central Highland provinces will plant new coffee trees on a total area of 61,000ha, increasing the area to 77,000ha by 2020, in order to boost the quality and value of local coffee products.
