Life for 3000 islanders has become increasingly difficult. This has gone on for nearly 2 months.
The local tap water system is not working, while the 80 cubic meter Bãi Bìm freshwater reservoir has dried out. This means that locals and tourists can only depend on groundwater.
However, groundwater sources on the island have also been nearly exhausted and are showing signs of saltwater intrusion.
Heavy rains are not expected until mid-August. Local authorities are encouraging locals to save water as much as possible, but the situation is looking dire.
