VTV.vn - After liberation from the Pol Pot genocidal regime on January 7, 1979, Cambodia built many monuments to commemorate Vietnamese who died fighting in the country.

The Cambodia - Vietnam Friendship Monument in Battambag Province has recently been restored. This is one of the 17  monuments in 17 Cambodian provinces which act as memorials for the soldiers listed in a plan to be restored and rebuilt by the two countries.

The monument represent three figures, Vietnamese voluntary soldiers, the Cambodian Army and the woman holding her baby represents Cambodian farmers. That's the symbol of the close co-operation between our two people and the sacrifices made by the Vietnamese soldiers to help liberate Cambodia from the genocidal regime and develop the country.

This can be considered an offering to the soldiers that sacrificed their lives to help liberate Cambodia from a genocide regime. However, their sacrifice has contributed to unity and solidarity between our two peoples and the peaceful environment for development.

Over 20,000 Vietnamese voluntary soldiers sacrificed their lives to help liberate Cambodia from the Pol Pot regime. At the moment, the remains of more than 4,000 are still missing. The friendship monuments built in Cambodia are a way Cambodian people to show their gratitude to those Vietnamese that fought and died in their country.
