Ca Mau Province heavily affected by climate change

The province faces the sea on its three sides, and most of the area within is lowlands or wetlands. The developing effects of climate change have had a strong impact on the lives of residents in this region.

Land erosion has become increasingly serious in recent years following a decade of continuous tides in Cai River. Some areas recorded about 10 meters of erosion inland, which toppled many houses. Each year, locals have to deal with a rising tide and its effect on their lands.

With a long coastline measuring 254 kilometers, dykes in the east and west are heavily damaged. Thousands of hectares of agricultural production are threatened, as is aquaculture.

If national sea levels continue rising at the projected level, the level might rise 25cm by 2040. As a result, nearly 4700 square meters, or 85% of the Ca Mau region, will be flooded by more than 1 meter. Climate change is no longer merely a forecast but a reality that seriously affects the lives of thousands of people in the Mekong Delta region.
