AAG submarine cable cut off – a familiar story

VTV.vn - As reported, at 5:17 this morning, April 25, 2015, the AAG submarine cable was cut off again. This is the second time in 2015, after the incident with the section near Vung Tau, back in January.

According to the information from the AAG cable administration center, the cause is identified to be from the SH1 section which linking Ho Chi Minh City to Hong Kong. This incident negatively affects all Vietnamese ISPs and users in international connections.

As one of ISPs currently utilizing this cable, NetNam have made timely fixes and redirections to prevent a decrease in service quality. Mr. Vu The Binh, NetNam’s CEO said: “The AAG submarine cables being interrupted is not a new story because the cable network have had a lot of interrupting incidents in the past”.

After dealing with multiple cases of surprising cable cut and long time to repair, NetNam is always ready to provide emergency measures and redirections. This incident is the same, according to NetNam Network Center, the cut didn’t have a major effect on NetNam’s network and services. “In the end of 2014, NetNam have expanded 15% of its bandwidth through IA Submarine cables, so the AAG incident didn’t make any notable influence”, according to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai, Director of NetNam Network Center.

With AAG’s multiple issues and incidents since 2009, building timely emergency backups while having the cause identified and the cables repaired will still be a challenge for ISPs to guarantee service quality and to deal with economic problems when Vietnam’s Internet is catching up to the world.
