Military ships and aircraft were deployed to search off the coast of Argentina for the submarine. Argentine officials also asked civilian vessels in the area to monitor for possible radio signals from the sub. The German-built diesel-electric vessel, ARA San Juan, was commissioned in 1985. It is used to repel underwater attacks and anti-smuggling on the waterway.
