The trip was approved by Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Commission for UNESCO. A representative from Quang Binh Province hopes that the tourism industry will be boosted after the ambassadors’ visit. Son Doong is part of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Bố Trạch District. Since the beginning of this year, 216 trekkers have visited the site. The cave was discovered in 1991, but only became internationally-known in 2009 after a group of scientists from the British Cave Research Association conducted a survey in the area.
