VTV.vn - A solemn ceremony was held this morning to mark the 55thanniversary of the Agent Orange/Dioxin catastrophe in Vietnam.

Incumbent and former senior state officials and international guests attended the ceremony. On Aug 10th1961, the US started spraying toxic chemicals in Vietnam, opening the longest and most extreme case of chemical warfare in history.

For 10 years, the US army sprayed 80 million liters of toxic chemicals containing at least 366kg of dioxin that let to 4.8 million Vietnamese people dying or suffering from multi-generational diseases.

Addressing the event, State President Tran Dai Quang asked authorities of all levels to spend more efforts on relieving the consequences of Agent Orange/dioxin and called for international and domestic organizations to seek justice for AO victims.

On this occasion, the Vietnam Association of Victims of Agent Orange was also granted the Labour Order First Class for their excellent achievements in Agent Orange/Dioxin-related issues.
