VTV.vn - Humanitarian Month 2024 aims to create a journey of kindness and compassion in which everyone can participate, contribute, and connect with each other to help people in need, multiply acts of kindness, and contribute to building a united and compassionate community.

The National Humanitarian Month has been held by the Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRC) every May since 2018. Over its six editions, the campaign has raised more than 3.4 trillion VND and provided support for more than 5.5 million poor and disadvantaged people throughout the country.

This year, the VRC strived to mobilising 400 billion VND (15.7 million USD) to support 100,000 individuals and collectives in difficult circumstances.

Building social houses for disadvantaged people is the highlight among the series of programme being organised within Humanitarian Month 2024 in Nghe An Province.

Accordingly, the Red Cross Society of Do Luong District delivered 50 million VND to fund the conduction of a new house for the family of Tran Van Minh, a 72-year-old in Hamlet 2, Dong Son Commune, who is a victim of Agent Orange/Dioxin.

While receiving the funding, Minh said: "|I am extremely touched and grateful. With the new house, we no longer have to carry buckets and basins to collect water from the leaky roof during the rainy season."

A newly-built house was also delivered to Nguyen Van Hien, born in 1987, and his two children in hamlet 4, Hong Son Commune.

"The Red Cross Society-built house has brought warmed the hearts of people in difficult circumstances like us," he said.

In addition to house building activities, the Provincial Red Cross Society has also paid attention to providing nutritional meals to disadvantaged people.

During this year’s Humanitarian Month, the association at all levels coordinated with benefactors to cook and deliver more than 10,000 free meals to patients receiving treatment at hospitals.

Nguyen Luong Hong, Chairwoman of the Nghe An Provincial Red Cross Society, reported that over the past six years, the Society has raised more than 40 billion VND for charity activities in the province.

The money has been used to help the most vulnerable people thrive in life.

In response to Humanitarian Month 2024, the Red Cross Society of Da Nang City’s Cam Le District provided 500 free meals for poor workers and people in difficult circumstances. The programme has received much appreciation from local workers, taxi drivers, and lottery ticket sellers.

Meanwhile, in Vinh Long Province, the Red Cross Society at all levels raised 50 billion VND to assist more than 10,000 poor people and those living in difficult circumstances in the locality.

The money has been channelled to purchase water filler equipment, award 500 scholarships to disadvantaged students, present water tanks to people affected by drought and saltwater intrusion, improve road system in rural areas, and set up food banks to reduce food waste and distribute food to the vulnerable.

Under the National Humanitarian Month 2024, the campaign titled "Trieu Buoc Chan Nhan Ai" (Millions of Steps of Kindness) was held from February 25 to April 21, attracting the participation of nearly 100,000 people who walked more than 2.5 million kilometres as calculated by the V-Race application.

The campaign collected 16.2 billion VND to provide free medical check-ups, treatment, and medicines to over 9,400 poor people in the provinces of Thai Nguyen, Son La, and Dien Bien; build 10 kitchens for preschools and primary schools and assist 82 poor households in Dien Bien; provide nutritional support and learning conditions for more than 7,000 students; and donate 100 water tanks to households in difficult circumstances.

Through a wide range of meaningful and practical activities, Humanitarian Month 2024 is truly a journey which carries compassion from kind-hearted people to those in need.

It has also contributed to raising public awareness of humanitarian work of Party committees, authorities, organisations, and individuals, thus creating a widespread solidarity movement in the community.
