All 193 Member States were represented to discuss and work together on a wide array of international issues. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, president of the 74th session of the General Assembly, declared the opening of the 2019-2020 session of the most representative body of the United Nations.
In his speech, Muhammad-Bande asked for action in line with the theme of this year's General Debate: "Galvanizing multilateral efforts for poverty eradication, quality education, climate action, and inclusion." The priorities of the General Assembly's new session include the promotion of peace and security, increased partnerships for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, poverty eradication, quality education, and climate change.
