VTV.vn - Thirty-two traffic accidents occurred across the country on May 2, the third day of the extended public holidays, killing 24 people and injuring 22 others, according to traffic police.

Compared to the third day of last year’s public holidays, the number of accidents remained unchanged, but the numbers of deaths and injuries increased by two and three cases respectively.

According to traffic police, most of the road accidents were caused by human errors, with reckless driving, drunk driving, speeding and wrong-way driving being the leading causes.

The police dealt with nearly 8,000 violations of traffic laws, more than double the figure from a year ago. They gave law-breakers fines worth nearly VND3 billion, seized 91 cars and 1,400 motorbikes, and revoked 428 driving licenses.

Vietnamese people have four days off work this year, including the two public holidays – April 30 which marks the 45th anniversary of the Liberation of South Vietnam and National Reunification, and May 1 or International Labour Day.

The first two days saw 59 traffic accidents occur, claiming 37 lives and injuring 26 others.
