Over one hundred delegates, including state leaders, from 105 Asian and African countries are partaking in this year’s conference. Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang lead a high-ranking delegation to the event. This week's summit is part of a series of events marking the 60th anniversary of the 1955 Bandung conference, which was attended by newly independent countries from both continents at the time to work together and avoid conflicts. The summit seeks to foster greater cooperation between Asia and Africa to improve growth and prosperity on all sides, in line with the spirit forged in Bandung.
At the conference’ first plenary session, Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang delivered a keynote speech at the event, themed “Strengthening South-South cooperation to promote world peace and prosperity”. Later on he held sideline meetings with leaders and senior officials from Iran, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Mozambique.
