Seven other members were given life sentences while four received jail terms of between 20 and 30 years.
Authorities said one of the remaining two suspects had killed himself while being detained for investigation, and the other succumbed to AIDS.
According to the indictment, Do Huy Hoang, the leader of the ring, in April 2013 carried seven kilograms of heroin and 4.4 kilos of methamphetamine on his car from Hoa Binh Province to Hanoi.
A group of police officers was dispatched to arrest him.
When the officers tried to block his luxury sedan on a road in Hoa Binh, Hoang, 39, drove straight into the two police cars and ran away.
During the chase, police fired several shots at the four-seater car, injuring Hoang and one of his accomplices. His 25-year old girlfriend was killed.
Two other members of the gang, who were escorting Hoang in a different car, were also arrested that day.
Police said Hoang had expanded his drug operations along the country for years, during which several members were caught but none of them snitched on him.
