According to Prof Dr. Bui Duc Phu, director of the hospital, this was the first heart-lung transplants conducted in Vietnam and the transplanted heart and lung were donated by a brain-dead donor from Ho Chi Minh city.
Hue Central Hospital sent four doctors to Cho Ray Hospital in HCMC to take the organs. They came back to Hue more than three hours later and finished the transplant in one hour.
Organs of the donor, who died after a work accident, have been given to five other patients. Doctors are still monitoring the patient after the first heart-lung transplant.
