VTV.vn - The Civil Aviation Administration of Viet Nam (CAAV) reported yesterday that last month saw only nine cases of theft of passengers' baggage and cargo at airports in the country.

This marked a record low for cases of theft since the beginning of this year.

Head of CAAV Lai Xuan Thanh said at a meeting with Transport Ministry leaders that in the first half of this year, more than 50 cases of airport luggage theft had been reported each month.

The number of thefts dropped to 28 in July and 15 in August.

The decreased incidence of theft proves that internal security measures have been effective, Thanh said.

For example, all staff is subject to security checks and patrol teams conduct surprise inspections of security staff and those working with the passengers' luggage.

Vice director of Noi Bai International Airport Nguyen Huy Phuong said the airport had added patrols and surveillance in luggage-handling areas.

Deputy Transport Minister Nguyen Nhat called on the airport authority to continue adopting measures to curb luggage theft and increase service quality.

He said airport luggage theft could result in a negative impact not only on the aviation sector but also on the country's image.
