VTV.vn - Saturday (August 8th) marks the 48th anniversary of he ASEAN community. This is short overview of ASEAN development over the past years and Vietnam’s contribution on the road to regional integration.

The idea of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) was adopted in 2007. The ASCC reflects ASEAN’s social agenda, focused on poverty eradication and human development. To realise the ASCC by 2020, ASEAN members are actively proposing measures to fight climate change, developing human resources, and enhancing ASEAN economic competitiveness in the world, as well as focusing on the development of women and children.

Within 2014, Vietnam successfully hosted many important events and Ministerial meetings. The country also promoted the ASEAN Community by creating airport customs gates especially for ASEAN members. Vietnam also hosts annual contests, including ASEAN stamp design, and an ASEAN quiz.

"Acknowledging the importance of mutual understanding, respect, and trust, we are pushing forward with the establishment of ASCC. The political and economic communities are somewhat complicated, but culturally, it is less complex to establish. If we work hard, we can make it happen. Members of the community can understand and support each other in many aspects" - Le Cong Phung First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs said.

Vietnam became a full member of ASEAN in 1995. Vietnam’s accession to the various ASEANagreements demonstrates the country’s commitment to economic cooperation in the region.
