Conference audits general and local election results

VTV.vn - A conference to audit the election process for the National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels from 2016 to 2021 was held on Monday morning in Hanoi.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, State President Tran Dai Quang, Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Former National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung and Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Nguyen Thiện Nhân attended the event.

Speaking at the conference, on behalf of the National Election Council, the National Assembly Chairwoman stated that the election took place in the context of changing and challenging domestic as well as international situation.

National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan said: "The election results revealed significant success. There were more than 67 million voters at the rate of over 99%. 496 deputies were elected by the 14th National Assembly. 3,908 representatives were elected to provincial people’s councils. Meanwhile, the district and communal levels have 25,181 and 292,306 members, respectively. However, in the electoral process, there are still some certain shortcomings, for instance, in some areas, the election results were annulled".

On behalf of the Communist Party of Vietnam Politburo, General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng said that the success of the elections to the National Assembly and People's Councils was extremely important, greatly contributing to strengthening the confidence of the people on the party, further tightening the close ties with the electorate.

Communist Party of Vietnam Gen. Sec. Nguyen Phu Trong said: "The participants basically reflected that there were a variety of groups of people participating and that the quality of the elected members improved, the number of deputies who were women, younger people and ethnic minorities were higher than the previous term. The election took place in a safe, transparent and calm environment. The success once again affirms the political awareness, sense of responsibility and patriotism of the Vietnamese people, demonstrating the confidence of our people in the leadership of the party, the management and administration of the state".

Besides achievements, the general secretary posed specified task in the coming period. This requires NA and the people's councils to continue to innovate and further improve the quality and efficiency.

Communist Party of Vietnam Gen. Sec. Nguyen Phu Trong said: "In the time ahead, we need to well prepare and successfully hold the first session of the 14th National Assembly - a very important meeting with the key task is to consider and decide on the senior government personnel for the 2016-2021 period".

At the conference, representatives of the National Election Council and conference delegates also shared experiences in the electoral process. This will be the basis for the National Electoral Council to propose new electoral legislation prior to the next election.
