HÀ NỘI — Police in Hà Nội’s Đống Đa District handed over two wanted criminals in South Korea to the South Korean police at the International Nội Bài Airport on Wednesday.
This was carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Security, Hà Nội Police Department and South Korean Embassy.
Kim Sun Woo, 19, and Lee Kang Woon, 23, both of Korean nationality, figure on the “wanted” list of the South Korean police for their involvement in marijuana trafficking.
The South Korean Police Department said Woon and his colleagues regularly traded marijuana illegally on social websites.
Woon frequently visited Việt Nam.
On September 12, 2017, Woon received some 400g of marijuana in Hà Nội. He hid it in tea bags and returned to South Korea through the International Nội Bài Airport.
On October 25 that year, Woon used the same method to transport some 8,7 kilogramme of marijuana from Hà Nội to South Korea.
The other suspect, Woo, played a key role in the drug trafficking ring when he arrived in Việt Nam. He was previously sentenced to a year in prison by a local South Korean court for using illegal drugs and has been in the radar of the South Korean police since.
On December 21, 2017, Láng Thượng Ward’s police, in cooperation with Đống Đa District police, caught the two suspects making a drug deal. They were planning to transport the drugs to South Korea while flying to Việt Nam as tourists. The two were detained.
After about a month of investigation and completing of the dossier, police handed over the two criminals to South Korean police. — VNS
