HÀ NỘI — Typhoon Bebinca has weakened into a tropical low-pressure system on Friday morning after it made landfall on the coast of provinces from Nam Định to Thanh Hóa.

The National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting said at 10am on Friday the strongest wind speeds near its eye reached about 40km per hour.

Due to the tropical low-pressure system’s impact, heavy rains with rainfall of up to 100mm poured down on the provinces of Thanh Hóa and Nghệ An from Friday morning. Heavy rain is predicted to last for a number of hours. In the meantime, water levels of local rivers are quickly rising.

Inundation occurred in districts of Quỳ Hợp, Con Cuông, Tương Dương, Quế Phong and Kỳ Sơn causing disruption to local residents.

Districts of Lang Chánh and Bá Thước in Thanh Hóa Province as well as districts of Kỳ Sơn, Tương Dương, Con Cuông and Anh Sơn in Nghệ An Province have been put on high alert of flash flood and landslides.

Heavy rain also reportedly hit the northern provinces of Lạng Sơn, Hòa Bình and Yên Bái on Friday morning. Districts of Cao Lộc, Lộc Bình and Chi Lăng in Lạng Sơn Province, districts of Văn Chấn, Trạm Tấu, Nghĩa Lộ and Mù Căng Chải in Yên Bái Province, and districts of Đà Bắc, Mai Châu and Lạc Thủy are warned of a high risk of landslides and flash flooding.

The forecasting centre still warns of torrential rains in Nghệ An and Thanh Hóa provinces over the next few days. — VNS
