Typhoon Nida has downgraded to a trough and traveled further into China but casualties and injuries have been reported in its wake in northern Vietnam.
“Thunderstorms and cyclones have wreaked havoc on many areas in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai,” the provincial Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control said on Wednesday.
The harsh weather conditions killed two and injured three residents while knocking down 17 houses and destroying five hectares of maize crops in Muong Khuong, Bao Thang, and Si Ma Cai Districts.
On Tuesday afternoon, strong winds slammed a tree into the house of Vu Thi Lien, 64, in Bao Thang. The woman was severely wounded while her one-year-old grandchild, Tran Viet Anh, was killed in the incident.
In Muong Khuong on the same day, lightning struck four people en route to a maize crop for harvesting, as they took shelter in a cave to wait for the rain to end.
The striking killed Giang Sao Chan, 19, and injured Lo Thi Hoa, 55, San Thi Chan, 52, and Lo Van Minh, 1.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, northern regions will keep being dampened by heavy rain with rainfall predicted to hit 200 millimeters until Thursday.Flash floods and landslides are also anticipated in northern mountainous regions.
