Typical rush hour congestion in one Ho Chi Minh district has transformed into a gridlock nightmare on sections of road with barricades in place for new road projects.

The severe traffic overload was well-documented on Nguyen Thai Son Street in Go Vap District on Thursday, with thousands of vehicles inching along the road at a snail’s pace.

The bottleneck began during the morning commute and became increasing exacerbated throughout the day.

According to Quoc, a cab driver, after nearly an hour on the Nguyen Thai Son Street, his vehicle had moved just a few dozen meters.

Aside from the typically commuter-heavy rush-hour congestion, road blocks on nearby Nguyen Oanh and Phan Van Tri Streets for the construction of a new flyover caused extreme delays.

Construction of the flyover, an initiative aimed at alleviating the serious traffic congestion that is typical for the Go Vap Roundabout, started on Wednesday morning.

The project also includes the expansion of Nguyen Oanh , Phan Van Tri, and Pham Ngu Lao Streets.

The project is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2017, with total investment capital topping VND405.7 billion (US$18.1 million).

Traffic jams also occurred in the area on Wednesday evening, with some commuters reporting delays of about two hours.
