Patient’s father stabs hospital security guard to death in central Vietnam

A security guard at a children’s hospital in north-central Vietnam has succumbed to his wounds after being stabbed by a patient’s father.

Lo Minh Huong, 60, a security guard of the Nghe An Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, passed away on Saturday afternoon, Phan Van Tu, director of the infirmary, confirmed.

Huong was stabbed by Nguyen Van Thai, 41, who is the father of a young patient, at the parking lot of the hospital at around 7:30 am on Friday.

Witnesses recalled the guard being stabbed multiple times before running inside the facility to seek for help.

Huong’s colleagues were aware of the attack and rushed to assist the victim before subduing the assaulter.

The security guard was admitted to the emergency room with four serious wounds in his stomach, rib, and neck, causing damage to his carotid artery, heart, and lungs.

Some 50 doctors, nurses, and officials were asked to donate their blood for saving the victim, who suffered severe blood loss.

Huong was transferred to the Nghe An General Hospital on Friday afternoon for further treatment, but he succumbed to the serious injuries the following day.

Officers from the provincial Department of Police have arrested Thai for murder.

Initial information showed that the fatal attack arose from some conflicts between Huong and Thai during the treatment of the latter’s child at the hospital.

According to managers of the hospital, Huong had worked at the infirmary for about one year.

There are 11 security guards at the facility, they said, adding that such a serious incident was unprecedented.
