SƠN LA — Police of the northern province of Sơn La, in collaboration with anti-trafficking customs authorities, have arrested two men suspected of trafficking drugs.

The anti-narcotics operation seized 11 packages of heroin (each weighing about 350g), more than 1,900 pills containing methamphetamine, one motorbike, two cellphones and other related items, the Vietnamplus online newspaper reported on Monday.

The two men apprehended, 26-year-old Vàng A Páo (a.k.a Vàng Vương Chí) and 25-year-old Vàng A Tráng, are both residents of Bắc Yên District’s Hua Nhàn Commune, one of the poorest localities in the country.

Authorities are expanding the scope of the investigation and more arrests could be forthcoming.

The mountainous province, sharing a 250km border with Laos, has always been considered a hot spot of drug crimes, with the number of cases and amount of drugs discovered or suspects arrested far exceeding all other provinces and cities in the country.

According to Vietnamese law, those found guilty of smuggling over 100g of heroin, or 300g of other solid drugs (750ml of liquid drugs) could face 20 years or life imprisonment, or at in serious cases, a death sentence. — Quang
