HCM CITY — The Sài Gòn Water Supply Corporation (SAWACO) and Vinci Construction Grands Projects – Bessac CW1 on Wednesday began construction of an underground water pipe to improve the city centre’s water supply.
This will be the city’s largest water pipe, with a diametre of 2.4 metres and length of 10 kilometres.
The pipe starts at Thủ Đức District’s Bình Thái intersection and heads toward District 1’s Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm – Điện Biên Phủ junction.
It will help deliver water from the Thủ Đức water plant toward the city centre and nearby districts Bình Thạnh, District 3, and Phú Nhuận.
The pipe will pass beneath Sài Gòn River and Rạch Chiếc Canal, with parts of the pipe connecting with existing water pipe networks.
The pipe will operate alongside a 2km-long pipe built before 1975. After the new pipe is installed, the existing pipe will be put into maintenance.
This project will cost VNĐ3.5 trillion (US$154 million), with a VNĐ3.1 trillion ($136.5 million) Official Development Asisstance (ODA) loan from The Asian Development Bank. The remaining funds will from the city budget and SAWACO.
Construction will take around three and a half years. — VNS
