VTV.vn - The Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinated with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Foundation of Germany to organise the international workshop "Vietnam in the UN Security Council: Strengthening partnership for sustainable peace", in Hanoi, on April 2.

Addressing the workshop, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung stressed that, in the 2008-2009 tenure, Vietnam performed its role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the first time.

Over 30 years of renovation, the role and position of Vietnam in the international arena has been increasingly confirmed.

Speaking at the seminar, Peter Girke, Representative of KAS Foundation’s Office in Vietnam, said that Vietnam has been nominated for a position as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the term 2020-2021 and the vote will be held by the UN General Assembly in June, 2019.

The second running for election to the UN Security Council continues to affirm Vietnam's policy in becoming an active member, and a reliable and responsible partner in the international community. Meanwhile, it is an opportunity for Vietnam to contribute to building an importance strategic mechanism for international peace and security, contributing to the maintenance of peace, stability and development in the region and the world at large.

The conference is an opportunity for experts and policymakers to discuss what Vietnam can do and what Vietnam needs to do in order to make a difference in the UN Security Council.

At the Conference, the delegates raised many ideas around the key contents of the workshop such as the situation of the world and the region in the period of 2018-2019 and the upcoming prospects, the current situation of the UN Security Council and prospects in the period 2020-2021, major issues at the Security Council in the period of 2020-2021 and approaches, in addition to the UN Security Council and regional organisations, promoting ASEAN's role in the UN Security Council and the role of the UN Security Council in the post-conflict reconstruction.
