Late President Tran Dai Quang was from Quang Thiện Commune, Kim Son District, Ninh Binh Province. He was a professor with a Ph.D in Law, and held the positions of Director General of Department of Security Advisory, and Director General of Directorate of Security. He graduated from the People's Police University under the Ministry of Home Affairs, which is now the Ministry of Public Security.
He served as Deputy Minister of Public Security from 2006 to August 2011, when he was appointed Minister of Public Security. He was member of the Party Central Committee, a member of the Politburo, the Party's decision-making body, and a National Assembly deputy. He served as State President of Vietnam from April 2016.
