Nguyen Phuong Thao got the highest score and was honored as the first winner. Thảo is currently a 12th-grade student at the high school for gifted students at the University of Natural Science in Vietnam National University in Hanoi. This is not the first time Vietnamese students have competed and have won a prize at the international biology Olympiad. At the previous contest, which was held in 2017, Thảo earned the silver medal. The contest this year attracted 261 students from all over the world.
