This is a seven-fold increase over the same period last year. The trend continues to increase as domestic supplies fall due to the African swine fever virus.
Vietnam mainly imports from the US, Canada, Spain, Germany, Poland, and France at competitive prices. Some foreign exporters offer pork at 30,000 VND/kg, much lower than the domestic price.
Following concerns over the safety of domestic pork sources, many food processing companies, industrial kitchens, schools have switched to imported meat. This may be a disadvantageous move for local farmers, who are suffering from the fever.
According to forecasts, the epidemic is still complicated and the price of imported pork may increase due to rising demand from Asian countries, including China.
