VTV.vn - Amidst difficulties and challenges, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam will not adjust the content of and is determined to realise the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Members of the National Council on Sustainable Development and Competitiveness Improvement reached the consensus during a meeting to review Vietnam’s SDGs implementation over the past five years and propose measures to boost the work in the time ahead.

At the meeting, presided over by the council’s chairman - Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, participants heard a report on the five-year progress of Vietnam’s SDGs implementation and assess the possibility of completion until 2030.

According to analysis results, by 2030, Vietnam will achieve five out of 17 groups of SDGs, including SDG 1 (poverty elimination), SDG 2 (hunger eradication), SDG 4 (quality education), SDG 13 (climate protection actions), and SDG 17 (global partnership).

Participants also pointed out some groups of SDGs which will be difficult to finalise by 2030, including clean water and hygiene, clean energy and reasonable prices, economic growth and sustainable employment, and social inequality reduction.

On that basis, the Ministry of Planning and Investment emphasised that from now until 2025, the national action programme on sustainable development should focus on further improving the system of institutions and policies and their enforcement efficiency, enhancing coordination between stakeholders to create pervasiveness in the realisation of SDGs, and mobilising and effectively utilising financial resources.

Together with improving the quality of human resources, promoting innovation, and strongly applying and developing science and technology, Vietnam will strengthen its resilience to uncertain risks caused by climate change, natural disasters and epidemics, while raising awareness to create social consensus in striving to complete the SDGs by 2030, as well as stepping up international cooperation and enhancing the country’s role and position.

At the meeting, council members assessed that the sustainable development programme launched by the United Nations in 2015 has received strong response from all member states, including Vietnam. The national action plan for the implementation of the UN’s programme outlines 17 groups of SDGs of Vietnam until 2030, including 158 specific goals, corresponding to the global SDGs.

In his address, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Van Trung said that Vietnam has actively responded to the UN’s sustainable development programme right from the initial days as its sustainable development criteria are in line with the Party and State’s policies and guidelines. From ranking 88th in 2015, Vietnam climbed to 49th place in the UN’s SDG Index in 2020. Vietnam’s sustainable development results in recent years have been highly appreciated by the UN, making it among the countries most expected to realise SDGs.
