The goal of the strategy is to ensure water supply for household use, agricultural production and industrial production with a particular focus on regions facing chronic water shortage, such as the Central Coast, the Central Highlands and the Mekong Delta.
Environmental protection and protection of aquatic ecosystems for sustainable development are also included in the strategy.
Under the strategy, Vietnam will strive to ensure 85% of water supply to cultivate two rice crops a year, of which 30% of the total rice growing area will be irrigated by advanced methods by 2030 and 60% by 2050.
The country also aims to raise the percentage of other crops irrigated by water-saving methods to 30% by 2030 and 60% by 2050.
As part of the strategy, Vietnam will take various measures to mitigate the negative impacts of drought, water shortage, saltwater intrusion, flooding, and erosion of riverbanks and coastlines.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is tasked with implementing the strategy with specific action plans, programmes and projects.
