Receiving high consensus from clubs and approval from the federation’s executive board, VFF President Le Khanh Hai recently signed a decision adjusting the number of teams for the V.League, First Division and Second Division for the next three seasons.
Accordingly, the three top-tier competitions of Vietnamese football will feature the participation of 14 teams each.
In the 2020 season, the 12th-placed team of the First Division will be relegated to the Second Division next year, while the three best teams of the Second Division will be promoted to the First Division in 2021, instead of only one slot as initially planned.
The decision to expand the First Division teams and increase promotion slots for the Second Division aims to contribute to enhancing the competitiveness and quality of domestic tournaments, in line with the roadmap of planning the number of participant teams in the national professional and non-professional playgrounds from 2021.
In addition, the move will offer more opportunities to select promising talents for the national team, alongside the major platform, V.League.
