VTV.vn - Max Verstappen was stripped of his Mexican Grand Prix pole position and handed a three place grid drop on Saturday for failing to slow for yellow warning flags.

Formula One stewards also imposed two penalty points on the 22-year-old Red Bull driver for the incident after Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas crashed on the final corner at the end of qualifying. Verstappen set his pole time with the first flying lap of the final top-10 session and faced yellow flags on his later second effort.

* Yamaha rider Maverick Vinales claimed his third pole position of the MotoGP season ahead of the Australian Grand Prix later on Sunday. Vinales lapped the Phillip Island circuit in one minute 28.492 seconds, 0.551 seconds faster than second-placed Fabio Quartararo.

* Santos’ hopes of catching Flamengo at the top of the Brazilian league suffered another blow on Saturday when they could only draw 0-0 at rivals Corinthians. Neither side looked capable of breaking the deadlock in a tense match that left Santos in third place with 52 points from 28 games, 12 adrift of Flamengo and two behind Palmeiras, both of whom have a game in hand.

* Wolverhampton Wanderers' French defender Willy Boly will miss the Premier League clash at Newcastle United on Sunday after suffering a suspected ankle fracture in training.

* Atletico Madrid snapped a three-game winless streak in La Liga by beating Athletic Bilbao 2-0 at home on Saturday to move level on points with table-topping Barcelona. Saul Niguez put injury-stricken Atletico ahead in the 28th minute while Alvaro Morata bundled the ball in from close range in the 64th to seal their first home league win for four games.

* Manchester City closed the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool to three points with a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday, while a hat-trick by American Christian Pulisic helped steer Chelsea to a 4-2 victory at Burnley. City moved to 22 points and put pressure on Liverpool, who host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, while Chelsea moved level on 20 points with third-placed Leicester City.

* Top seed Roger Federer dispatched Greek third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 6-4 in the semi-finals of the Swiss Indoors championships in Basel on Saturday for his 50th win of the season. It was a record 16th time that Federer had won 50 ATP tour games in a season and he has yet to drop a set at this year's Basel tournament, where he has now won 23 consecutive matches over the years. The 38-year-old will be looking to win his 10th title in his hometown when he faces unseeded Australian Alex de Minaur in Sunday's final - the 157th tour-level final of the 20-times Grand Slam winner's career.

* Defender Lucas Digne's own goal deep into stoppage time completed a superb comeback by Brighton to give them a thrilling 3-2 win over Everton in their Premier League showdown at the Amex Community Stadium on Saturday.

* Watford's winless run since the start of the Premier League campaign stretched to 10 games when they played out a 0-0 draw against Bournemouth at Vicarage Road on Saturday. The result leaves Quique Sanchez Flores's Watford bottom of the standings with five points while Bournemouth, who were held to a second consecutive 0-0 draw, are eighth with 13 points.

* Lys Mousset's second goal in as many games earned Sheffield United a 1-1 draw at West Ham United on Saturday, with the point sending the newly-promoted side seventh in the Premier League. The result means the visitors are now unbeaten in their last three, with West Ham without a win in their last five games in all competitions.

* Robert Lewandowski scored for a league-record ninth consecutive Bundesliga match as Bayern Munich scraped past promoted Union Berlin 2-1 on Saturday to reclaim top spot in the league. Lewandowski, who has scored in every competitive game in the league, Champions League and German Cup this season for a total of 19 goals, netted his 13th league goal eight minutes after the restart for his new Bundesliga record.

* Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund played out a lacklustre goalless draw on Saturday that saw both teams drop behind in the Bundesliga title race. Bayern Munich lead the title race on 18 points after edging past Union Berlin 2-1.

* Juventus dropped points for just the second time this season in Serie A when they were held to a 1-1 draw at Lecce on Saturday. Juventus struggled to find a breakthrough against the spirited hosts in the absence of star man Cristiano Ronaldo, who was rested for the trip. The champions remain top of the table on 23 points, one point ahead of Inter Milan in second, who were held to a 2-2 draw by Parma at San Siro the same day.

* Dutch top seed Kiki Bertens clawed her way back from a set down to beat China's Zheng Saisai 2-6 6-3 6-4 on Saturday and advance to the final of the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, China. Bertens faces Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, who came back from a break down in both sets to beat the Czech Republic's Karolina Muchova 7-5 7-6(4) in the second semi-final.

* Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen shared the points following an offensively-minded affair between the two sides in the 9th round in Bundesliga on Saturday. With the draw, Bayer Leverkusen climb on the 8th place meanwhile Werder Bremen remain on the 12th position.
